Planning a move — local or intercity? Ask these 7 questions when hiring movers in Bangalore.
Relocating within Bangalore or moving out of the city is rarely a quiet experience. Ever tried to pull a truck loaded with goods from Silk Board Junction on a weekday morning? Or made your way through the narrow streets of Rajajinagar or Fraser Town with a 14-foot vehicle? If yes, you already know that shifting to this city requires more than just sturdy hands and cardboard boxes.
Bangalore’s explosive growth means that hundreds of new moving companies have entered the market. And you shouldn’t trust all of them with your belongings. Before you hand over your keys and your furniture to someone, ask these seven questions.
1. Is your company registered, and do you have a valid trade license?
Moving companies in Karnataka are required to have valid GST registration and, based on their size, a ‘Shops and Establishment’ license under the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act. Demand both documents.
A legitimate company operating out of Whitefield or Peenya will not hesitate to show these to you. If a company only hands you a visiting card with a mobile number, it is your signal to get out of there.
2. How many years have you been working specifically in Bangalore?
Experience matters more here than in most cities. The layout of Bangalore is really complex. The road conditions, traffic timings, and logistical planning between shifting a house from Koramangala to Hebbal and shifting from Yelahanka to Electronic City are completely different.
A mover who has worked on these routes for many years would know how to schedule a truck before 7 a.m., or avoid Brigade Road altogether on weekends, to avoid the jams of Old Airport Road. Specifically ask about their experience in your source and destination neighborhoods.
3. Do you have goods-in-transit insurance, and what exactly does it cover?
The roads of Bangalore are not forgiving. A pothole on Hosur Road, a sudden braking on the Outer Ring Road, or even a minor scratch in the narrow lanes of Malleswaram can damage the furniture and delicate items placed inside the truck.
Any reputable mover will offer freight transit insurance. But, don’t rely on verbal assurances—ask for the policy documents. Check if it covers not only the total damage but also the wear and tear, and find out the claim process before signing anything.
4. Do you own your own vehicles, or do you delegate the work to third-party truck operators?
This question matters a lot in Bangalore. A large number of small operators work as brokers here. They take your booking, then hire a local truck and laborers on the day of the shifting, who have no control over the quality.
A company with its own fleet of enclosed goods carriers will take more accountability for the move. If you want to be absolutely convinced, ask to see the RC book of the vehicle. Companies with their trucks handle delicate electronics, modular kitchen parts, and large appliances with far more care because they have direct responsibility.
5. Can you handle apartment-specific accessibility challenges?
This is a question that most people forget to ask. And it creates a real problem on the day of the shift. Bangalore is full of gated communities from Sarjapur Road to Thanisandra, where RWAs require advance notice, visitor passes, and sometimes a specific time frame for vehicular movement.
Some high-rise apartments in Whitefield and Bellandur have restrictions on the size of the elevator that affect the way furniture is carried.
A good moving company will ask you these questions beforehand and coordinate with your housing society in advance. If they don’t have a protocol for it, consider it a red flag.
6. Do you offer warehousing or temporary storage in Bangalore?
Given the way Bangalore’s rental market works, there is often a time gap between vacating an old flat in Jayanagar and getting ready to occupy your new place in HSR Layout. Sometimes, landlords need 24 to 48 hours after the agreement is signed before handing over the keys.
A moving company with its own storage facility, ideally one that is climate-controlled for sensitive items like electronics and wooden furniture in the humid months of the monsoon, can save you from a very stressful situation. Ask where the warehouse is located and if you can go there.
7. Can you provide references for customers in my area?
‘Word of mouth’ (people’s recommendation) is still the most reliable filter in Bangalore’s unorganized moving market.
Ask for references from customers who have moved to or from part of your city within the last six months. The experience profile of a mover who regularly serves Indiranagar will be different from that of a mover doing interstate shifting from industrial areas near Tumkur Road.
Talking to a single previous customer can give you more information than ten glossy brochures.
One More Thing to Do Before Finalizing
Always insist on a written, itemized estimate. Make sure it lists every charge, including ladder fees, heavy item surcharges, and fuel costs for long distances within the city.
Bangalore has seen a sharp rise in complaints of sudden charges added after delivery. It is particularly true for shifting to new areas like Devanahalli or Attibele that fall outside the standard city limits of some companies.
Take everything on paper, keep a copy, and don’t pay in full until every item is delivered and checked.
