Nashik is an ancient holy city in Maharashtra state, located at the Western edge of the Deccan Plateau on the banks of the Godavari River. The city is about 200 kms from the City of Mumbai as well as Pune. It is an important, cultural, agricultural, IT and industrial center in the state. Nashik is a popular city in Maharashtra state because of its beautiful surroundings and pleasant climate. As per 2001 Census of India, Nashik population was 1.4 million.

As Nashik has many temples and pilgrimage places, it is known as a holy town for the Hindus in India. Well, Nashik is now developing as a lively city with a blend of ancient and modern touches. There are several temples, historic sites, forts, etc. It is home to many industries also. One of the many interesting facts of Nashik includes – It is one of the sites of the Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years. Nashik is also called as the “Wine Capital of India” because half of India’s vineyards are located in this region only. One of the most important thing Nashik is famous for is fruits and vegetables productions like Gapes, Strawberries and Onions.

Nashik has cultural, mythological, historical and social importance. Before the Ramayana Period, Nashik was known as Panchavati, Janasthan and Trinkat. It has a rich historical past. According to the mythological story Lord Rama, The King of Ayodhya, had made Nashik his residence during 16 years of exile. It is also said that this is the same place where Lord Laxman cut the nose of Shurpanakha, thus the city was named as Nashik.

Nashik has relatively mild version of a tropical wet and dry climate. Nashik Temperature slightly rises in October month, but followed by cool temperature starts from November to February. In winter also the city sees warm temperature of around 28 °C during the day, but cool nights.

Best Places to Visit in Nashik

Ramkund

Ramkund Ghat is one of the important places in the Panchavati Area and holiest places in Nashik to visit, located in the heart of Nashik’s old city. It is believed that Lord Ram had bathed and performed the death rituals of his father here and due to this this holy water attracts both pilgrims and tourists.

Pandavleni Caves

On the way Bombay-Agra, about 2.5 km from Taj Residency, there is a hillock that houses Pandavleni caves. This one of the best places to visit in Nashik. It is located about 15 mins Southwest of Nashik. The hillock and cave cut can be seen from a distance. Height of the caves will be approx. 300 ft. from the bottom of the hillock. The main cave, number 18 is a prayer hall with a stupa and other caves that hold most interests are number three and ten.

Brahmagiri Hill

Brahmagiri Hill is not far from Trimbakeshwar Temple. It will take around two to three hours to reach to the top of the hill and you will be rewarded with a fabulous view of the city. There are two temples as well. This hill is considered as the huge form of Lord Shiva and is also the origin of the sacred Godavari River that flows underground before emerging at Trimbakeshwar Temple compound.

Trimbakeshwar Temple

Trimbakeshwar Temple in Nashik is one of the holy places in India. It is one of the 12 Jyotarlingas of India hence, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Surrounded by dense forest and mountains, Trimbakeshwar Temple is situated in the hilly region of Sahyadri mountain ranges of Western Ghats.

Saptashrungi

This is a temple dedicated to Goddess Saptashrungi and located within the seven mountain peaks in Nanduri Village near Nashik. Saptashrungi Temple is one among the 51 Shakti Peeths in the Indian subcontinent.

Sita Gufa

Located in Panchvati near Kalaram Temple, Sita Gufa is a pilgrimage and a popular tourist destination in Nashik. It is said that this is the spot from where Ravana had kidnapped Goddess Sita. There is narrow staircase that leads to the caves. The caves house the idols of Lord Rama, Laxman and Goddess Sita along with a Shivling, said to be the one Sita worshipped.

Kalaram Temple

This temple is dedicated to Lord Rama and is the most important Hindu Shrines in the city of Nashik. The black statue of Lord Rama is worshipped here and due to this this is the most famous temple of Lord Rama in India.

Dugarwadi Waterfall

Located only 30km from the Nashik City, Dugarwadi Waterfall is one of the best and beautiful tourist spot. This is a natural waterfall that offers nice trek down the mountain and nature bloom throughout the year, especially in monsoon season.
