Surat history dates back to 300 BC. Surat was earlier known as Surayapur (1500 – 1520 A.D.), an old Hindu Town, which was later colonized by the King from Sauvira on the banks of River Tapi. Till the beginning of the 20th Century, British rulers took its control from the Mughals.
