Puri City Information

Home to the holy Jagannath Temple, one of the Char Dhams, Puri is situated on the Bay of Bengal, in Orissa. It is also known as Sri Jagannatha Dhama after the 12th-century Jagannath Temple located in the city. Puri and the Jagannath Temple were invaded 18 times by Muslim rulers, from the 7th century AD till the early 19th century to loot the treasures of the temple.

Puri has been chosen as one of the heritage cities for the Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) scheme of the Government of India.

Narendra Tank

This is no ordinary tank. This is one of the largest tanks in Orissa. History shows that it was probably built during the 15th century. Markandeshwara Temple

Puri is known for its magnificent temples and Markandeshwara Temple is also one of those. This beautiful temple was built back in the 13th century.

On the entrance, one can spot a big Nataraja idol with ten arms. The insides also have figurines of goddess Parvati, Ganesha and different avatars of Lord Shiva placed all over the temple. The view is enticing and worth visiting at least once.

Road network includes NH 203 which links the city with Bhubaneswar, the state capital, situated about 60 kilometres (37 mi) away. NH 203 B connects the city with Satapada via Brahmagiri. Marine drive, which is part of NH 203 A, connects Puri with Konark.
