Patna City Information

Patna, earlier known as Patliputra, is the capital city of Bihar. It is also the largest city in the state. The place holds deep significance for many faiths- Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs and Jains, having many notable pilgrimage spots.

Gandhi Ghat

One of the most famous ghats of the holy river Ganga in the city. This one is notable because the ashes of Mahatama Gandhi were immersed here. As soon as dusk approaches a divine Ganga aarti is held by the priests lighting 51 lamps, which attracts hundreds and thousands of devotees from all around the globe. Patna Sahab Gurudwara

This is one of the holiest shrines of the Sikh community. The tenth Sikh guru- Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji took birth in Patna and the Patna Sahib Gurudwara was built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in his reverence. Sikhs from all around the world visit the Gurudwara to pay their respect to their guru. A morning prayer called ardaas is performed here every morning at 5:45 AM and evening prayer at 6 PM. Not only Sikhs, but people from all communities are welcome and are served langar.

Patna Museum

Founded by Sir Edward Gait, Lieutenant Governor of Bihar during the British Raj back in 1917. The place has around 20,000 exhibits which are quite intriguing in themselves. They have a casket containing Mahatama Buddha’s ashes, a fossil of a 200 million-year-old tree, ancient scriptures and a lot more. The curious child inside you would love it.

Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park

The Governor of Bihar in 1969 established this park as a botanical garden. Today it’s both a botanical park and a zoo. The zoo has around 800 animals in 110 species and the garden has around 300 species of trees herbs and shrubs. Families often come here to spend some quality time together and enjoy picnics.

Golghar

Golghar was built by Captain John Garstin in 1786 as a granary for the British army garrisoned in the city. The most unique thing about this structure is that this huge dome which is 29 m in height and 125 m in diameter, is not supported by any pillars! It is whitewashed and has a spiralled staircase in it. The architectural marvel is worth visiting.

Nalanda Mahavihara

Remember the name from the national anthem? Nalanda was one of the oldest universities in the country and probably even the world. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for all the rich legacy that it carries. The place still has ruins of the past and libraries containing ancient wisdom. Choti Dargah

A little away from the hustle-bustle of the city, just 32 km west of Patna lies, one of the finest and least known Mughal structures in India – the Choti Dargah of Maner. This was built in 1616 in honour of the Sufi saint Makhdoom Shah Daulat who passed away in Maner and was buried here. It’s adorned with a beautiful, has handwork all over and has inscriptions from Quran. A must-visit for sure.
