The historic city of Gwalior, once ruled by the Kachchhapaghata and the Tomar dynasties, later passed on to the Mughals and then even the Marathas and finally followed by the Scindias is a major city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

The city is surrounded by various forts. The city is located in the upper region of Madhya Pradesh and occupies a strategic location in the Gird region of India.

It is located 343 kilometres (213 mi) south of Delhi, the capital city of India, 120 kilometres (75 mi) from Agra and 414 kilometres (257 mi) from Bhopal.

The city has served as a significant spot in the independence struggle. Post-independence though, it has emerged as a major tourist attraction. It has also been counted in the new list of the upcoming smart cities in the country by the government.

The name Gwalior means the abode of Gwalas (the cow/buffalo herder). Since Gwalior falls in the region of the greater Braj area which can be assumed to be roughly a circular area of 200 to 250 km radius having its centre at Mathura. Braj culture has historically had great a connection to cows, buffaloes, milk, butter, curd, etc.

Economy of Gwalior

Gwalior has always been known for its industries and that’s almost always been the driver of the city’s economy. The developmental corporations of Gwalior are largely working towards rapidly growing the city’s industrial sector and supporting the economy.

The late Madho Rao Scindia built Phool Bagh, and it was inaugurated by the Prince of Wales in 1922. This used to be a residential palace and now is converted into a museum. You’ll be pleased to find a gurudwara, a temple, a mosque, and the city zoo on its campus. The place is famous for its well-maintained lush green gardens.

Surya Temple

A beautiful temple built with red sandstone and shimmery pearl white marble back in 1988 by the famous industrialist G.D. Birla, still standing tall in its glory is a sight to behold. They say that its design is inspired by the famous sun temple of Konark.

Saas Bahu Temple

This name is given to a unique twin temple in Gwalior. These are built in the famous Gwalior Fort. It was built in 1903 by King Mahipala of the Kachchhaphagata dynasty. The temple holds within itself the stories of the Hindu-Muslim invasions and the wars that took place over the span of its existence
